Lancashire Business School (LBS) students on a prestigious leadership development LaunchPad programme, after a couple of seven-hour flights to Hong Kong and a good night’s sleep, met up with employability gurus to chat about interview techniques.Inspiring recruitment professionals from a range of fields shared employability boosting tricks of the trade and motivated a group of 24 students to make a thorough preparation for their interviews to maximise the success of landing a graduate job.

The meeting presented students with an opportunity to talk to Nick Anderson, SVP and leadership development expert at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Lorraine Merirhead, recruitment expert who’s currently setting up her own business, and Rose Colledge, chief executive at Work Comms.

Nick, who spoke about the types of interviews and the importance of preparation from an employer’s perspective, shared: “Nothing else says better ‘don’t hire me’ than the candidate who doesn’t know what the company does.”

Apart from the importance of research, students were able to pick up other themes that emerged during the meeting. The gurus stressed the significance of mutual cultural fit between the candidate and the company and the power of lasting impression.

It was great to listen to what the speakers had to say, however it wasn’t all about keeping the ears open. Students had an opportunity to demonstrate their evaluator pitches, 30-second introductions about themselves, which according to Lorraine can be a power tool to influence potential employers.

LaunchPad coordinator and LBS employability lead, Francesca Walker said: “The meeting really reinforced the message about what graduates need when they are aiming to get interviews for graduate roles.

“We’ve taken on some really big messages from the speakers and learned so very much about what employability is.”
